Salzburg is the fourth largest city in Austria and one of the most picturesque cities in all of Europe. Home to some of the most breathtaking historical sites from World War 2, your Salzburg itinerary 5 days would be incomplete without-
1) Visiting the palaces-
Although each palace in the city could easily have its own entry on this list, for the sake of simplicity it is best to put them together. The Hellbrunn Palace should be a top priority on any vacation guide to Salzburg for its striking renaissance architecture and amazing landscaped parklands. The Hohensalzburg Castle is another high priority castle from the 11th century that rests atop the Festungsberg hill. This castle in particular offers great views of the city as well. The Mirabell Palace is a 17th century palace that is also well worth considering as it is opulence the kind that is rarely seen anywhere else in the world.
2) Visit Hangar 7-
This is an experience completely unique to Salzburg and makes this journey guide for its ingenuity. Owned by Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz, the structure is a work of modern architectural art that holds great collections of helicopters, airplanes and old Formula 1 racing vehicles. The venue also hosts a dining option that is quite unique and is definitely worth the trip, especially for the car enthusiast or for those travelling with the whole family.
3) Take a hike (literally) -
Salzburg is a city that offers some great places for hiking and walking and is, therefore, the perfect vacation for the adventurous traveller. Monchsberg is a mountainous region ripe for the hiking and has excellent trails on which to do so while Kapuzinerberg is another very similar opportunity. The choice between the two places is largely up to personal preference as they both offer excellent trails and some great photo ops. Note: It is best to go to the one closer to where you are staying in the city.
4) View the works of art-
As with any city in Europe, Salzburg has seen a very deep and rich history and has the art to prove it. The city is full of art museums and galleries that should definitely be on any travellers journey guide, including the Residenzgalerie, famous for its huge collection of works by Rembrandt, Carlo Saraceni and Hieronymus Francken the second. The Salzburg Museum is another great place to view some spectacular art; this time mostly for the modern artwork collection housed here which is quite expansive. The building itself is a bold piece of architecture founded in the early 19th century.
5) Visit Petersfriedhof-
This is an entry on the list specifically for the traveller who wishes to experience a thrilling walk through the city’s history. Petersfriedhof is a burial site in Salzburg that happens to be the oldest cemetery in the city and is located at the foot of the Festungsberg hill. The area is best known for its picturesque appearance as well as its striking architecture. The 12th century burial site also includes several old chapels as well as the catacombs which sprawl underfoot and make for a somewhat spooky experience. The cemetery has several legends and little tales attached to it that are definitely worth exploring, given the chance as they are an incredibly interesting piece of Austrian culture and add great value to the visit. You can't miss this travel ideas while visiting places around the world.
Note: It is best to visit Petersfriedhof during the earlier hours of the day as the most picturesque lighting possible for the location is during that time and it makes for some of the best photo ops in the entire city.
